What is science?
Science is the study of the world around us. Scientists learn about their subject by observing, describing, and experimenting. There are many subjects and branches of science. Some study outer space like astronomy. Other sciences study life (biology) or the earth (geology) or even matter and energy (physics).
What is engineering?
Engineering is the the practical application of science to commerce or industry. A person who practices engineering is called an engineer. Engineers design and build complex products, machines, systems, or structures. Engineers want to know how and why things work. Engineers often specialize in a specific branch of engineering.
What is the difference between a scientist and an engineer?
"Scientists investigate what is; they discover new knowledge by peering into the unknown. Engineers create what has not been; they make things that have never existed before."
- Joe Bordogna, former deputy director, National Science Foundation
