Mission & Values

CariSTEM is a platform for persons and organizations interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) within the Caribbean. We aim to provide relevant articles and other resources to aid the development of the STEM areas in the Caribbean.

Our mission is to become a premier resource for promoting and developing the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics within the Caribbean region.

The audience for CariSTEM includes:

  • Secondary school students interested in what’s happening in the Caribbean and the wider world in STEM, and how the mathematics and science they're learning plays out in the “real world.”
  • University students interested in developments within the Caribbean in their fields of study, seeking topics for projects and research, and exploring ideas on possible career directions.
  • Professionals following developments and opportunities that might impact their work.
  • The general public interested in how STEM developments and issues might affect their lives, and in the activities and achievements of Caribbean people engaged in STEM

Installing, configuring and Administering Oracle Database Software has been the domain and responsibility of Oracle Database Administrators (DBAs) for decades.  The IT industry, with respect to providing IT services, support and software development are traditionally siloed organizations, meaning that specialist individuals and/or teams all adhere -only- to their specialist areas, such as DBAs look after, typically, databases in production (live) and test environments, system administrators would look after the OS and hardware environment where said databases would reside and so on.

Transportation is a broad sector, encompassing many sub-sectors such as freight logistics, traffic engineering and network management, air transport, passenger transport, transport policy, and development planning. "Transportation Planner" is a generic job title for a practitioner who is responsible for the day to day planning and delivery of programmes and infrastructure across the many sub-sectors of transportation.

Python is a powerful scripting language, which has a number of numerical and scientific libraries such as Numpy and Scipy. A simple python script to create a Chebychev II lowpass filter is presented which uses the Numpy, Scipy and the Matplotlib library.

I had already set my sights on the noble goal of making a contribution in writing to the world of engineering, when my fellow university alumnus (a.k.a. ‘super senior’) asked me to write about the day in the life of an engineer. It was needless to say that I jumped at the opportunity. The term ‘university life’ contains two words that should never be put together. Freshmen everywhere may find this particular idea something of an enigma, but my best advice would be to enjoy it while it lasts. Engineering can be quite a fulfilling and rewarding vocation with the right attitude and a solid foundation in the basics of the discipline.
